Zanzibar - First Domestic Violence Hotline

Anonymous Helpline for Women and Girls

Domestic Violence is a critical issue all over the world, but in many countries it is not openly discussed or addressed. Zanzibar is not exempt from this issue, and cultural taboos and lack of counseling centers prevent many women from seeking help or speaking out about their experiences.

The consequences of domestic violence are comprehensive and far-reaching: injury, reduced self-worth, negative workplace performance, decreased capacity to care for others, and death are all the results of abuse at the hands of a spouse or family member.

Women without Borders will work closely with ZAYADESA, the NGO of the First Lady of Zanzibar, Shadya A. Karume, to establish an anonymous aid hotline for victims of domestic violence. The hotline will function as the first step towards reducing this abuse and to provide an overview of the magnitude of the problem and the needs of the women calling in.

The domestic violence hotline will have two counselors who are trained in psychological, social, and legal issues. Furthermore, one day a week a female lawyer will take calls in the center, to provide professional legal advice to victims of domestic abuse.
