Grieving the loss of Lily Munir

SAVE’s dedicated representative in Indonesia, Lily Zakiyah Munir, has sadly passed away after a long struggle against cancer.

Lily died in hospital on Friday 27th May, 2011. She was one of our first and most committed members. She was a beautiful woman, both inside and out, and her values are an example for all of us.

Lily founded the Center for Pesantren and Democracy Studies, and coordinated SAVE Indonesia. Her vision was one of social justice, quality and pluralism in Indonesian society. The mission of her organization is to nurture progressive, open-minded and tolerant Muslims through democracy and human rights education.

Lily took on the SAVE mission from the very beginning, organizing SAVE workshops and training her staff to continue her valuable work. She reached out to young mothers and presented the initiative to government members.
This loss is very hard for the entire SAVE network, as Lily was a role model for the achievements that can be made through commitment, belief and love. Lily worked tirelessly to make the world a better place for future generations. She was a warm and loving woman, who improved the lives of everyone she met.

We will never forget the huge contribution to SAVE that Lily made, both on a personal and professional level. She was one of our strongest supporters, and we regret her loss deeply.

SAVE’s close friend and colleague Dewirini Anggraeni will continue Lily’s work as representative for SAVE Indonesia. She will join us in Vienna from June 5-9 for the Mothers MOVE conference.
